Gen Z found to be the most stressed at work

In the current economic climate, most workers feel uncertain about their professional future. However, it is Gen Z that has been found to be feeling the strain the most.

The cost of living has seen an increase in layoffs and pay that isn’t keeping up with rising inflation, causing a fluctuation in anxious and worried workers.

Gen Z has only started out in their careers, but it’s already been found that they are the most stressed and more prone to burnout.

Many Gen Zs started entering the workforce during the pandemic, which was difficult for not just this demographic.

Why are Gen Z the most stressed workers?

A 2023 study conducted by Cigna International Health found that 91% of 18-to-24-year-olds reported being stressed – compared to 84% on average.

The data also revealed that unmanageable stress affected almost a quarter of the Gen Z contributors at 23%, and nearly all 98% of participants were dealing with signs of burnout.

Economic hardships are greatly intensifying workplace troubles. A study in 2023 by Data HR software company Workhuman showed the cost-of-living crisis is affecting 84% of UK workers’ stress and anxiety.

However, it is Gen Z that appears to be struggling the most. A study conducted in October 2022 reported that the demographic said their pay did not allow them to have a “good quality of life” in the current economy.

Many Gen Zs are living pay-cheque-to-pay-cheque with many saving significantly less money. They are also struggling more than other generations to hit milestones, such as home ownership.

    Gen Z and workplace struggle

The social aspects of work continue to be intimidating to Gen Zers. They are struggling to create interpersonal relationships in the workplace.

Experts say many feel that workplace etiquette and work friendships still feel alien after starting work during the pandemic.

This combination of workplace and economic stress has led to a poor work experience. Further data has found Gen Z workers report more struggles than other demographics in hostile work environments. With mental and physical health issues in the workplace.

Young workers collectively have also been found to be less likely to establish connections with colleagues and build relationships with crucial mentors.

Those Gen Zers that was at university during the pandemic were forced to finish their degree in isolation with online learning, only to enter an unusual working world. With many seeing or being threatened by redundancy or furlough.

Employers need to recognise that they are contributing to Gen Z’s stress and need to act to help them maintain their mental health. Effective support is needed to improve these demographics’ professional future.
