    Office based stress research

The digital payments provider Equals Money has revealed that the UK office-based workforce has high levels of stress. The study asked 1,500 UK office workers. 90% said they feel stressed at work, with 18% saying they were stressed all the time at work.

The study found that the main causes of office-based stress were work overload (56%), lack of communication (31%), and bad management (28%). The responses came from a variety of working levels such as junior members, business owners and managing directors.

One aspect that all workers found to distract them from their priorities was managing finances. Nearly a third (32%) said it added to their stress. Daily financial tasks include filing expenses, invoicing clients, and receiving and paying invoices.

Stress and the effect on businesses

Overall, the statistics showed concerning figures on employee retention for employers. Over three-quarters, (76%) of workers said workplace stress has made them want to look for a new job, and 29% of these said they are actively looking.

Stress was also found to cost employers time and money. 60% of workers said they had to take time off due to workplace stress. Businesses are already under a lot of pressure in the current economic climate, and stress is making the workforce less efficient.

To make things worse this stress is causing 88% of office workers to suffer from physical pain (back, neck or joint pain) while at work. Which is having a negative effect on their quality of life.

Over a third (36%) said that pain distracts them from their job. A quarter (25%) said pain prevents them from enjoying activities outside of work.

Pain from workplace stress is something that many employees must deal with on their own. 31% are actively taking painkillers and 47% use a chiropractor. But, almost half (49%) are not offered a chiropractor as part of a workplace benefits scheme.
