Cost-of-living crisis causing employees to steal

As the UK sees the cost of living rise even further, there has been an increase in employee stealing. This has been discovered by insurer Zurich.

The insurance firm found nearly 6,000 employees were caught stealing from their employers last year. Up from the 5,000 incidents logged in 2021. The data was collected from a Freedom of Information request to the 43 police forces in England and Wales.

These workplace theft cases mean that 500 employees a month were caught stealing. However, the amount is likely to be higher as only recorded crime was established.

The highest recorded workplace theft incidents were in Northamptonshire, with 43 incidents per 100,000 people, while the lowest was found in Dorset. But it was Lincolnshire that had the highest percentage rise with 44%.

Employee theft did decline in eight areas, these included Durham, Warwickshire, Northamptonshire, and Staffordshire.

The link to employees stealing and the cost-of-living crisis

The scale of workplace thefts was found to be broad. Theft ranged from office supplies to embezzlement of company funds.

Professionals argue the rise in workplace criminal activity is related to the current cost of living crisis.

London had the biggest amount of employees stealing at 874 incidents, with a rise of 32% compared to 2021. However, proportionately London had less crime per head than other areas. The data showed 900 incidents with a population of 9 million in 2022.

Zurich also confirmed a rise in commercial crime claims. These recent crimes included a £150,000 theft by a ring of employees at a food manufacturer and a £50,000 claim from a double-glazing firm defrauded by its finance manager.

    Reducing employee theft risk

Zurich suggested businesses can reduce the risk of employees stealing by implementing robust payment controls, regular audits, and positive work culture.

The firm said they have also seen an increase in claims for social engineering. These cases saw fraudsters manipulate employees into making payments or handing over bank details and passwords.
