Research found that one-third of employment contracts do not provide flexible working

Many employees feel ignored by their employers when it comes to hybrid working. A survey found that 43% of companies did not seek feedback from their staff on work arrangements, and only 40% of employees reported that their organisation sometimes shared survey feedback, while 11% said they never shared any.

Is flexible working beneficial for businesses?

Maintaining communication between business leaders and employees is crucial for building trust within an organisation.

While there may be times when the needs of the organisation take precedence over policy, it’s important to have an open dialogue about flexible working arrangements. This is especially critical now, as widespread flexibility in the workplace is still a relatively new concept.

Not being transparent about flexible working options can pose a significant risk to attracting top talent, and it can also hinder creating a culture of openness and inclusion within the organisation.

Candidates need to feel that they have a clear understanding of their flexible work arrangements and that they can count on stability. Professionals who value flexibility won’t hesitate to seek out an organisation that includes flexible working options in their contracts.

The Flexible Working Act, which was granted royal assent in July, will be effective next year. The act allows employees to request flexible working from their first day on a new job.

What has the study on flexible working found?

According to the recent study conducted by recruitment company Hays and shared exclusively with People Management, 37% of employees do not have hybrid or remote working included in their employment contracts.

Surprisingly, even though 84% of workers consider flexible working agreements to be essential when accepting a new job, they are not always included in their contracts.

Further findings stated that 53% of employers consider transparency regarding their company’s flexible working approach to be very important for attracting employees. Another 34% of employers said it was quite important.

The study included 8,800 professionals and employers. Only 8% of employers believe that transparency around flexible working is not very important, while just 5% said it was not important at all.

The research also revealed that hybrid working is a significant factor in employee turnover. Almost half (47%) of professionals said they would consider changing jobs if an organisation was more transparent about the flexible working options available.
