Women more likely to be paid below the real Living Wage

Recent research from Living Wage Foundation has discovered that women are more likely to be paid less than the real Living Wage. One reason for this is that 13 percent of women are on zero-hours contracts compared to 9 percent of men.

There are concerns that this is causing women to struggle more with the cost-of-living crisis than men. To heighten this worry 27 percent of women stated they are not paid when their shifts are cancelled, compared to 17 percent of men.

Currently, the real Living Wage is £10.90 in the UK. London is slightly higher at £11.95. There are over 12,000 businesses across the UK that voluntarily pay for this. Some of these include – LUSH, Burberry and Aviva.

Over 450,000 workers get a pay rise every year because of their commitment to always pay staff at least the real Living Wage.

    The Living Wage Foundation research

The 14 percent of women being paid below the real Living Wage equated to 2 million in the UK. Whereas in men it equated to 1.4 million. That’s more than half a million women workers earning below the real Living Wage compared to men.

These stats show that 60 percent of jobs paid below the real Living Wage are women workers.

The Living Wage Foundation research also found that 34 percent of women are less likely to have regular office hours compared to men (46 percent).

Women in shift work were also more likely to be on zero-hours contracts compared to men. That’s 13 percent of women compared to nine percent of men who were on zero-hour contracts.

The research also discovered women are also less likely to receive payment when shifts are cancelled. The study found 27 percent of women were not paid when shifts were cancelled, compared to 17 percent of men.

Women’s attitudes on pay and the cost-of-living crisis

The Living Wage Foundation asked low-paid female workers what their attitudes were on their pay and the cost-of-living crisis.

A huge percentage of 75 percent of women said their pay negatively impacted their levels of anxiety, compared to 56 percent of men.
72 percent also said their pay negatively affected their quality of life, compared to 66 percent of men.

Low pay also had more negative impacts on women compared to men. 82 percent of women said they have had to make further cutbacks, compared to 73 percent of men.

When asked if the cost-of-living crisis was the most difficult financial period they have ever experienced, 80 percent of low-paid women agreed it was. Compared to 75 percent of men.

Women also agreed that being on low pay during the cost-of-living crisis has made it impossible to meet basic living costs (80 percent). Whereas 71 percent of men agreed.

Jenny Baskerville, Chair of the Living Wage Advisory Council, said: “We’ve certainly come a long way in tackling low pay in the UK, but today’s statistics show there is still more to be done. This International Women’s Day, the 2 million women in the UK who are earning below the real Living Wage must be front of mind.”
